What are the Treatment Options for Depression?

For some people, depression is something that comes from time to time, but usually, the condition will subside on its own without the need for treatment. However, for those who experience persistent bouts of depression, getting treatment for the condition will help improve quality of life and overall well-being. In certain cases, leaving depression without the proper treatment can result in serious depressive episodes, and it can have an effect on life in many ways.

Some of the most common symptoms of depression include a persistent sadness that doesn’t go away, difficulty waking up, feeling distant from loved ones, having thoughts of self-harm, feeling tired even with the right amount of sleep, and a general feeling of being useless. While some Psychiatrist Houston TXpeople think that treatment is not needed, and the depression will go away on its own, certain imbalances with the brain chemistry can cause the condition to occur, and without the right approach, the condition will generally get worse overtime. For those who experience depression, there are many different mental health treatment options available.

Antidepressant Medications

Medication is one effective form of depression treatment used in order to help the person relieve the various symptoms of this disorder. When using medication as a form of treatment, there are different classes available to treat depression that are called antidepressants.

While one may work for some people, it may not work for everyone. While working to treat the symptoms of depression, your Houston mental health doctor may try different types of medication until he or she finds the one that works for you. Common antidepressants include:

-       SSRIs: One class of medication is called SSRIs, which stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This type of medication works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain. One common cause of depression is lack of proper serotonin levels, and changing these levels can cause a great improvement in the depression symptoms.

-       SNRI’s: This class of antidepressants is one of the newer ones found on the market today. It stands for serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, which works by changing both of these chemicals in the brain. These chemicals are related to happiness and pleasure, and some people will experience a slight stimulating effect from this class of antidepressants. This also helps with the fatigue that often occurs while in a depressive state.

-       MAOIs: This drug works by blocking a specific enzyme in the brain, which is known to help improve depression. It is one of the oldest depression medications, but it is one of the less common medications prescribed. This medication is not commonly prescribed because it interacts with many different foods, vitamins, and other medications, which can make it difficult for some to take.

-       Other medications: Certain medications that are used for depression, but work on other chemicals in the brain that are not directly known to cause the condition include buprophin, remeron, and trazidone.

Antipsychotics

In some cases, the use of antidepressants alone will not be enough to take away the depression. The doctor may prescribe the use of an antipsychotic agent as an add-on treatment. Some of the medications within this class will increase the effects of an antidepressant medication, while also helping with the side effects that people may experience from the medications, such as irritability and nervousness.

Therapy

While medication is often used to treat the depression, therapy is also combined with medication to provide better results. Therapy is used because it allows the patient to address the areas of life that may be causing them to feel depressed, or to help the depress person learn healthy coping techniques for their depression.
